Witchblade is a comic book published by Top Cow Productions. The story follows Sara Pezzini, an NYPD detective, who has become this generation's wielder of a powerful, ancient mystical weapon known as The Witchblade. Since bonding with the weapon, Sara's life has been embroiled in mystery and the supernatural, bringing her both conflict and alliance with other supernatural powers in this world. Witchblade was co-created by Marc Silvestri, Michael Turner, David Wohl, and Brian Haberlin in 1995. It was one of the top selling comics of the 90's, and in July of 2006 released its 100th issue. Quite a feat for a comic from an indie publisher. Witchblade has been published in 21 languages in over 55 countries and remains Top Cow's bestselling title.
Witchblade was first adapted for television by TNT. The pilot movie was shown in 2000, and the series lasted two seasons from 2001-2002. It starred Yancy Butler as Sara, Eric Etebari as Nottingham, David Chokachi as Jake, and Anthony Cistaro as Kenneth Irons.
In 2006 Witchblade was adapted as an anime by Gonzo. This adaptation does not feature Sara as the wielder, but instead is set in 22nd century Japan and the wielder is a police officer named Masane Amou. Funimation has recently licensed the anime and is in talks to show it as part of the Adult Swim lineup on Cartoon Network.
My sole affiliation with Witchblade is that I buy it. I have nothing to do with Marc Silvestri, Michael Turner, Top Cow Productions, or anyone else. I'm just a fan.
