The Story

Momo had the measles and missed the first three weeks of school.  By the time she got there everyone had formed cliques and Sae was the only one who approached Momo to be friends with her. Momo regrets letting Sae this close, because Sae is a copycat who takes everything Momo wants and copies everything she does.  When Sae asks her if there is a guy she likes, Momo lies and tells her she likes Kairi, who is one of the hottest and most popular guys in the school.  She doesn't want Sae to know she really likes Toji, a quiet guy she went to junior high with. 

Sae makes a play for Kairi, but he shoots her down flat.  She gets pissed off and spreads rumors about Momo and Kairi.  Momo goes to Kairi to get him to help her fix things, but has to tell him that she really likes Toji.  Sae and Toji overhear this. Afterward Toji tells Momo that he likes her and they start dating.  Sae, however, sets her sights on Toji and tricks him into kissing her, leading to his first fight with Momo.  She also uses Toji's jealousy of Momo's growing friendship with Kairi.

Sae weaves many lies and intricate webs of deception to come between Momo and Toji, and they break up.  However, Kairi helps Toji see through Sae's lies to the devious person inside and he gets back together with Momo.  They expose Sae for the person she is to the class, whom she has turned against Momo, and Sae becomes a flat shell of her former self.

Sae bounces back when she catches the eye of Goro, a handsome male model who doesn't see through her facade.  Sae goes out with Goro for a time, but seeing that it doesn't make Momo unhappy or jealous, she becomes unhappy dating him.  Since Goro tells her he will do anything to make Sae happy, Sae tells him she wants Toji. Sae drugs Momo and gets Goro to spend the night with her.  When Momo wakes up nude in Goro's bed she remembers thinking she was with Toji and believes she has been raped. 

Toji shows up and beats the crap out of Goro, only stopping when Kairi shows up with Misao, and Misao pulls him off.  Afterward Momo is very depressed and hysterical, but Toji reaffirms his love for her and, with some help from Kairi, they figure out that Sae set them up.  They set Sae up with a friend of Kairi's who will punish her but not actually rape her.  However, Sae ends up in the wrong room and nearly does get raped. Fortunately for her, Kairi, Toji and Momo had figured out that she was in the wrong room and rescue her before the actual rape.

Sae blames them and is pissed that she can't take away Momo's happiness, but finds another way quickly.  She shows Toji photos she has of Momo with Goro and tells him that if he doesn't dump Momo and go out with her, she will give them over to the tabloids.  Toji agrees to do so to protect Momo and breaks up with her, not telling her why.  Momo is devastated, but Kairi tries to help her through it and they end up spending the summer together and becoming very close.  Misao find out what Toji is doing and begs him to tell Momo but he refuses, saying she can get over a breakup but not having her whole life ruined.

Momo and Kairi begin dating and Momo begins getting happy again.  She gets jealous and suspicious when Kairi's ex-girlfriend Morika shows up and acts like she's still interested in Kairi. When it turns out she's only using Kairi to get to his brother, she relaxes again.  Later she meets Ryo, Kairi's brother, and gets taken in by his facade even though Kairi has warned her that Ryo is just like Sae.  Ryo nearly rapes Momo, but Kairi shows up in time and rescues her.  Afterward, Momo tells Ryo that he is scum.

Momo learns that Kairi has been in love with Misao for a long time, but that Misao actually cares for Ryo.  Kairi tells Momo that he loves her but he loves Misao more, but has never told Misao his feelings.  Momo encourages him to do so.  Kairi says that he thinks they ought to break up, because he does love Momo and doesn't want to hurt her any more than he already has.  Toji tells Kairi off and punches him for hurting Momo, then helps Momo work through her feelings for Kairi. Momo realizes she loves Kairi and wants to be with him, so she tells him that she's fine being second best and that she's going to make him love her.

Sae meets Ryo and falls hard for him.  She breaks up with Toji.  Sae agrees to do nude photo shoots with his company and starts selling cosmetics and going to hotels with shady men.  She turns her money over Ryo in a pyramid scheme.  They also have sex.  Sae steps in front of Ryo when Momo goes to slap him and tells them that she loves him.  But when he sets her up to do a porn video, Sae balks and Momo, Kairi and Toji rescue her. Sae is devastated that Ryo sold her out but buys his line about wanting her to give up on him.  She begins changing into a better person and sets Momo up so that she can see Goro again, this time so that Goro can apologize to Momo and tell her that they didn't actually have sex.

Momo sees Kairi kiss Misao and gets jealous about it and doesn't talk to him for awhile.  She comes home to find Sae in her room and Sae actually acts like a friend and gives Momo some good advice.  She then does the same with Kairi. Kairi takes Sae's advice and goes and tells Misao how he feels.  Misao tells him she loves him like a little brother and it could never be anything more. Kairi then tells Momo what happened and tells her he needs some time to work out his feelings.  She says that's okay.

Sae does a bit more scheming, however, and sets Toji up to work with Momo at the grocery store after Kairi has quit.  Sae arranges for Momo to overhear her talking to Toji where she hands over the remaining pictures of Momo and Goro, thereby letting Momo know what happened between her and Toji and that Toji was simply protecting Momo all along and that he still loves her.  Toji asks her if Kairi doesn't meet her at the appointed time and place if she would get back together with him. 

Kairi ends up in another part of Japan working in a soba restaurant.  Momo has given him a ticket to meet her at the beach where they first met on the last weekend of summer.  He agrees to meet her there if he decides to be with her.  The chef at the soba restaurant helps Kairi realize that he loves Momo more than he loves Misao, he's just been blind to it.  But just after that Kairi comes down with pneumonia and can't contact Momo.  Kairi goes to meet Momo at the appointed time and place, only he is delayed because of a hurricane and the fact that the trains aren't running.  Kairi hooks up with Sae and they try to get to Momo in time, but they don't make it. 

Toji followed Momo to the beach and they get back together.  They go up to the beach house and make love.  Kairi is devastated that Momo gets back together with Toji but he understands and doesn't blame her.  He tries to put on a game face and brings his facade back.  Momo finds out Kairi still cares for her though, and is confused by her own feelings.  She tells Toji this and he tells her he can wait until she knows what her feelings are.

Sae, meanwhile, thinks she's pregnant and gets Kairi to help her try to get to Ryo.  She hates Misao because Misao finally admitted her feelings to Ryo and Ryo has told her that he reciprocates them.  When Sae tells Ryo that she's pregnant he questions her and Misao tells him off for being insensitive.  Ryo then tries being nice to Sae and telling her to find someone else and have an abortion.  She tells him she'll do anything for him and he tells her to break up with him.  Sae goes after Misao, but Misao tells her she has no intention of dating Ryo now.  Misao tells Ryo off. Since Sae told him she won't abort the baby, Ryo decides to be nice to her again so he can get her to a place where she can get beaten up and thereby lose the baby.  They have a long talk in the park and he comes to regret his decision.

Morika, however, has hooked up with the goons that Ryo hired and has paid them to beat up Ryo instead.  When Ryo tells them to forget the plan to beat up Sae, they go after him.  He tells Sae to run and she does.  Sae calls Momo just as Toji and Kairi are forcing her to choose between them. Morika tells Sae what's going on, but Sae runs to stop them from hurting Ryo and ends up getting hit in the stomach.  She and Ryo are rushed to the hospital where she finds out she isn't pregnant after all.

Momo chooses to be with Toji, but still has feelings for Kairi.  She loves Kairi but feels safe with Toji. After she gets out of the hospital, Sae comes over and tells Momo about what happened the day that Kairi didn't meet her at the beach.  Afterward, Momo runs into Misao who's on her way to a meeting for an arranged marriage.  Sae and Kairi go to where Momo is supposed to meet Toji and wonder what happened when Momo is late, but she shows up after all. 

Sae, therefore, leaves a message on Momo's phone pretending to be Kairi and telling her that he's going to go commit suicide up at the beach where they were supposed to meet.  Momo realizes that she really loves Kairi more and leaves Toji to go to rescue Kairi.  She gets to the beach just in time to save Kairi, who has gone into the ocean to get the cell phone case Momo made for him.  She thinks he's trying to kill himself however.  She tells him she loves him and wants to be with him.  Sae shows up afterward and tells them that she set it up.  Momo decides that she will never again underestimate what she cherishes most.
