Ueda Miwa

Ueda Miwa is the manga-ka who wrote and drew Peach GIrl. She was born in Hyougoken in Japan. Her first published manga was Momoiro Biyaku, (Peach Colored Elixir) in 1985. She has published many other manga, though none has come close to the popularity of Peach Girl. She has said that Momo is based on herself in high school, but that her own love life was nowhere near as exciting as Momo's.

Peach Girl

Peach Girl began being serialized in Bessatsu Friend in 1999. It first came over to the US in 2001 and was serialized for awhile in Smile before that magazine was cancelled. It has been translated into Italian, French, Portuguese and Chinese, and perhaps other languages as well. Peach Girl won the Kodansha Manga Award in 1999.

Series & English Translation

When Tokyopop translated the manga they divided it into two series: Peach Girl and Peach Girl: Change of Heart.  They initially published Peach Girl in Western format, left-to-right, but are republishing it now in Japanese (right-to-left) format called Peach Girl Authentic.  All of this is arbitrary on the part of Tokyopop and has nothing to do with the actual Japanese release of the manga.  Peach Girl is a single series and a single continuing story, despite the breaks Tokyopop has made in the translation.

Live Action Series

Peach Girl was so popular in China that it spawned a live-action drama series in Taiwan.  I don't know much more about the series than that.  You can visit the official website of that show via a link on the right, but it's in Chinese.

Anime

There is a twenty-five episode anime that aired on Japanese television between January and June of 2005.  By all accounts it has heavily compressed the storyline and the animation isn't the best.  I know the character design for Momo doesn't look much like she does in the manga, but the character design for Sae is pretty darn good.  If you're interested in the episode titles, click here.

Kairi's Name

I read Peach Girl in the English translation, where one of Momo's love interests is Kiley.  Since then I have learned that his actual Japanese name is Kairi.  Apparently Kairi's name only changes to Kiley in the English translation, because a French fan told me that his name remains Kairi in the French translation.

I have a feeling that Tokyopop changed his name to Kiley to make it sound more like a boy's name to the American reader.  Gawd forbid that he might have a name that looks too feminine.
