Kogepan's story

In
Hokkaido there was a famous bakery that made delicious red bean buns from the
most expensive red beans. Only twenty such buns were made each day, so they
were very rare and desirable.
Kogepan was supposed to be one of those delicious breads.
Kogepan happily awaited the moment when he would be taken out of the oven and he began to giggle with excitement as he pondered being a perfect red bean bun. But alas! The baker tipped the pan as he removed it from the oven and Kogepan's happiness was short-lived. He fell off the pan into the back of the oven!
It was dark and smoky in the back of the oven and Kogepan was very frightened. He smelled a burnt smell coming from him and wished that someone would come and save him. Finally the baker found him and took him out of the oven, but his skin was no longer golden and he had burnt a dark brown.
The
baker did not put him up for sale with the other red bean buns, because no one
would want to buy a burned bread. Kogepan was lonely and upset, and felt his
life as a bread was meaningless. The other breads looked at him with pity, and
some of the meaner ones called him names. The baker paid no attention to him at
all. Kogepan felt the whole world hated him. He became depressed and his eyes
turned white.
Kogepan
ran away from the bakery and took up smoking and drinking milk (which was like
beer to him), but this made him even more depressed and pessimistic. He became
quite disillusioned with life.
Finally
Kogepan decided to go home to the bakery and not live life like that anymore.
He returned to the bakery and tried to improve himself by reading How to
Become a Delicious Bread. He hopes that if he just works hard enough he too
will become a delicious red bean bun. He is very jealous of the pretty breads,
however, and often loses hope when he sees them. Sometimes he likes to speak to
the pretty breads and teach them about life, just to release some of his stress.
