Extreme Justice

Extreme Justice was a spin-off of The Justice League of America in the mid-90's.  Yes, I bought this title just because Firestorm appears in it.  I'm still searching for some of the back issues, though.

Captain Atom led the team after his frustration with the JLA leadership led him to form a more proactive team.  He took a kind of kick-ass and take-names approach, a more proactive stance to the superhero business.  His team took the fight to the villains rather than reacting to the villains' plots.

President Bush would probably approve, and Extreme Justice might do better today if it were a current title.

Ron became a member of Atom's team after he recovered his powers and was cured of leukemia, becoming Firestorm V (see character profiles).  The elemental Firestorm also made a brief appearance in 2 issues.  A former villain of his, Plastique, was also a member of the team and I'm sure you can imagine that you could cut the tension between and her and Firestorm with a knife.

Extreme Justice was not a long-lived series, lasting only 18 issues before hitting cancellation; in other words a year and a half.

Personally, I kind of like Extreme Justice, but it's not the best comic I've ever read.  It's also not the worst.  If there were more issues, well, that would just be more back issues I'd be hunting for.  I didn't buy it at the time because I wasn't buying comics at that time (money was really tight) plus I hadn't heard of it.  That's one of the bad things about the comics world - if you aren't hip deep in it, you're not going to hear about new titles.  I would have bought it at the time if I'd known about it - I am that big a fan of Firestorm, after all.  It's been worth it searching out the back issues, at least for me.

What I like about it is the flawed characters, the lack of the über-perfect Batman and Superman types.  What I dislike about it was what they did with Ron's character - I'm sorry, after the relationship that developed in Firestorm between Ron and Martin, there's no way he wouldn't help Martin hang onto his humanity in every way he could.
