Pet shop of Horrors

Pet Shop of Horrors is a 10 volume manga series of gothic shoujo horror, or dark fantasy if you will, from manga-ka Matsuri Akino. There is also a brief 4 episode anime series, and a sequel (Shin Pet Shop of Horrors) that is currently being published in Japan.

In the series the mysterious Count D runs a pet shop in Chinatown where you can find any exotic or magical pet you may be seeking. The buyer should beware, for the Count's pets come with a price and a lesson, one that is generally painful, and sometimes fatal, to learn.

Each tankoubon is organized into 4 chapters, each following the story of one of D's customers. The title of each chapter begins with the letter D, which is the fourth letter in the English alphabet. In Japan the number 4 is considered especially unlucky and is associated with death. Considering the consequences of ignoring the rules associated with the pets, this is quite appropriate.
